Several weeks ago, we made some changes to our website. Among the changes was a new feature that allows readers to translate our blog to other languages. This feature is made possible by a WordPress plugin called Global Translator. Translation is done via Google Translation Services and frankly speaking, the translation is awful! But it is still useful for readers that understand little or no English. After you translate the blog, you can always hover over each line of translation for the original English text.

Global TranslatorThe Global Translator plugin offers translation to several languages, including both traditional and simplified Chinese characters. The weird thing though is that the translation buttons show two China flags. One is for traditional and the other one for simplified Chinese characters. Readers who didn’t realize this might have thought that both buttons were for simplified Chinese characters, as was the case with Susan’s mother.

Global Translator pluginWe’re not trying to be political or say anything that would cause our blog to be blocked, but China does not use traditional Chinese characters. Matter of fact, China is the only Chinese-speaking country that uses simplified Chinese characters. Therefore, it is not correct to use China’s flag for the traditional Chinese translation button. We’ve gone ahead and tweaked the plugin so that the traditional Chinese translation button uses a different flag. We won’t mention which country that belongs to…

Anyway, here’s a snapshot of the gibberish traditional Chinese translation.

Taipei Chu Chu Yuan (台北楚楚园) didn’t close down after all! Last week when Susan was looking for Chu Chu Yuan, she couldn’t find it. The Chu Chu Yuan that used to be in the basement of Hong Kong Plaza (near Huai Hai Road) isn’t there anymore because HK Plaza is under heavy construction. Apparently, the [...]

On Monday, we went to the annual peach blossom festival in Nanhui, Shanghai. This year’s peach blossom festival is from March 28 to April 12.
Nanhui is located about 45 minutes southeast of where we live in Zhang Jiang. We took a bus (张南线) from Zhang Jiang subway station to Nanhui. Originally we were [...]

Excerpts from Henri Nouwen’s Show Me the Way: Daily Lenten Readings:
As [Christ] rides into Jerusalem surrounded by people shouting "hosanna," "cutting branches from the trees and spreading them in his path" (Matt. 21:8), Jesus appears completely concentrated on something else. He does not look at the excited crowd. He does not wave. He sees beyond [...]

We recorded this around Christmas time 2008. Learning the entire Nutcracker Suite is one of our many ongoing projects. We actually performed parts of the Nutcracker Suite during our Boston wedding reception in 2006. We have yet to learn the rest of the Nutcracker, but one of these days we will!

Several months ago (12/21), Susan had dinner with her former student Jennifer and her family along with other teachers that used to work with Jennifer. We had dinner at Laris, one of the restaurants at Three on the Bund. Jason didn’t join us because he was still recovering from his eczema/viral outbreak and didn’t want [...]

Ding Tai Fung (鼎泰丰) is famous for their xiao long baos (小笼包). You can find Ding Tai Fung in Taiwan, China, U.S., Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Korea, and Indonesia.
We’ve visited Ding Tai Fung in Taiwan and China before. Jason can’t actually eat the xiao long baos (or anything else they serve) due to his [...]

Excerpts from Henri Nouwen’s Show Me the Way: Daily Lenten Readings:
We are often tempted to “explain” suffering in terms of “the will of God.” “God’s will” is not a label that can be put on unhappy situations. God wants to bring joy not pain, peace not war, healing not suffering. Therefore, instead of [...]

Recently, we bought an Omega Juicer 8003 from the U.S. If you buy direct from Omega, you can get the 220/240 volt model for the same price as the 120V model, which is only $229 USD!
If the machine was sold in China, it would have been at least double the U.S. price! We got [...]

One of our projects as a tribute to Iris, also a way to help Avery remember her mother, is to put together some of Iris’ favorites songs. It’s unfortunate neither one of us are into non-classical music, but Jason has been learning jazz piano for some time.
“The Girl from Ipanema” (“Garota de Ipanema”) is [...]

Yes, we’ve turned over to the light side. We’re eating organic now and right here in Shanghai! No, we’re not eating completely all organic since it’s almost impossible in China, but we’re going to try to eat as much organic food as we can.
There’s no Whole Foods or Trader Joes in China, so we [...]

(Post by Susan)
Iris’ shadow has been dancing around the house. I see flashbacks of her wherever I go. I see her sitting in front of the computer checking her email. I see her watching Grey’s Anatomy on the couch. I see her in the backyard playing with Avery. I see her lying in bed hugging [...]
