“Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation” 1 Peter 2:2
Our niece, Avery, is about 5 months old now. The last time we saw her was in October when she was just a newborn baby. Since then, we’ve only seen photo/video updates of her and she’s changed so much! We were looking at pictures from when we were back in the U.S. in Sept/Oct and comparing them with the most recent pictures. She’s gained at least ten pounds, grew a few inches, and added a few layers of baby fat all over, most prominently on her face. When she smiles, her lips and neck are swallowed by her triple chin. She makes all sorts of googoogaagaa sound, hiccups all the time, smiles when she’s in a good mood, laughs when she’s happy, and shrieks when she’s hungry. She’s just the most adorable baby in the world. Almost makes us want to have one of our own.
Babies grow so fast! When they’re your own, you can’t really tell because you see them every day, every hour, but when they’re other people’s, you really notice the growth spurt! Especially for us, we could only rely on the weekly photo/video updates of Avery and be blessed from across the Pacific.
One of the things we remembered about Avery during her first month was that she seemed hungry all the time. Every feeding time, she drank every drop of milk given to her within a few minutes, then she’d cry for more. Then, 30-60 minutes before the next feeding time, she’d cry again. She had a great appetite and always seemed to want more than what is supposedly normal for her developmental stage. And the strange thing was, she was really thin for babies her age/length (at that time), somewhere in the first quarter percentile. But now, five months later, it is quite evident that her craving, appetite, and love for milk are very noticeable in her photos and health checkups! She’s probably somewhere in the 90th percentile range for her weight now! She’s a very healthy baby!
And so we ask ourselves, what about us? That is, the craving for spiritual milk part and being spiritually healthy. Some of you might be thinking about something else, but we’re talking about 1 Peter 2:2.
- Do we crave for spiritual milk like babies crave for milk?
- Do we have a big appetite for spiritual milk?
- Do we get hungry easily and want more than the normal “quota”? Or are we easily full and want no more?
- Are we growing noticeably in our faith that others can see and be blessed?
- Are we spiritually FAT and healthy?
“Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation” 1 Peter 2:2
Let Avery be an example for us to live a life of undivided spiritual concentration and devotion to our heavenly Father.

I want to see pictures. Fat Asian babies are the cutest IMHO. Great post! I am so glad for your Lenten discipline about more focused blogging.
