What Not to Say to Your Child

This entry is part 1 of 4 in the series What Not To Say

There’s a Chinese book titled “What Not to Say to Your Child as a Parent” and it’s about 100 phrases that Chinese parents often say to their kids that have damaging/negative effects. Susan came across an article about the book and even though we’ve never seen or read the book, a quick google search lists the 100 phrases (which Susan will translate to English in the next few posts).

Indeed, one does not need to read the book to recognize some of the phrases that have been repeated way too many times as we were growing up. It might conjure up some bad memories or hit a sore spot. Maybe we’ll realize the demons inside many of us who grew up with Chinese parents. Perhaps some of us will finally understand why we deal with low self-esteem/self-image and major insecurity issues. To think, we actually believed them when they told us we were found in a dumpster! (As opposed to the white kids believing that the storks brought them and left them at the doorsteps)

We thought to post the 100 phrases on our blog, loosely translated from Chinese to English. Sorry, a lot of it is lost in translation.
