Last Sunday night, we had a special treat of attending a concert by Dresden Staatskapell at the Shanghai Oriental Arts Center. The program was Brahms Symphony No.4 and Beethoven Symphony No.5, conducted by Chung Myung-Whun. One of Susan’s former student’s parent gave us the tickets because they were going to be out of town and couldn’t make it to the concert. What a treat! Priced at 800 RMB per ticket, we were seated right infront of the double bass section! The performance was awesome! Ironically, one of the best part of the concert was the *silence* during and between movements (minus the coughing)! No cell phone ringing, chattering, humming along loudly, clapping in between movements, etc… It also helped to have the digital message board (normally for opera subtitles) flashing “Do not clap between movements” throughout the entire concert. This is Shanghai concert experience at its best!
